TikTok teamed up with Europol’s anti-terrorism group and 11 European countries to tackle online terrorist and extremist content. Together with investigators from these countries, they focused on finding and removing content that praises past terrorist events or the people behind them. TikTok often shares reports on how much extremist content they remove, and recently, they’ve taken down 95% of such content.
In this operation, they reviewed about 2,145 pieces of content, ranging from jihadist to violent extremist videos and memes. Spain and the EU Internet Referral Unit led this effort, with help from law enforcement in countries including Czechia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Malta, Portugal, Sweden, and the UK.
This event is part of TikTok’s ongoing effort with law enforcement to make the internet safer. Similar actions have been done with Europol and other online platforms before.
