In the midst of the Israel-Hamas war, China is stepping in to collaborate with Egypt in hopes of bringing about a ceasefire. Zhai Jun, China’s Middle East envoy, recently had a phone conversation with Egypt’s assistant minister for the Palestinian territories, expressing China’s willingness to work with Egypt to end the violence as soon as possible.
Zhai emphasized the importance of communication and coordination between China and Egypt, urging both parties involved in the conflict to cease fire and put an end to the violence. He also called on the international community to join forces and provide humanitarian support to the Palestinian people.
The death toll in Israel has risen to 1,200 people, with the majority being civilians. In Gaza, officials have reported more than 900 casualties as a result of Israel’s air strikes. The situation has escalated rapidly since Hamas launched its shocking assault on Saturday, marking the deadliest attack on Israel in its 75-year history.
Egypt, known for its mediation efforts in the region, has been actively pushing for diplomatic solutions to de-escalate the violence. The country has a long history of mediating between Israel and the Palestinians and was the first Arab nation to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. Alongside Israel, Egypt has implemented a blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007.
China has recently positioned itself as a mediator in the Middle East and has shown its commitment to resolving conflicts in the region. In March, China successfully brokered a restoration of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iran, two key players in the Middle East.
Zhai also stressed the importance of implementing a “two-state solution” as the fundamental solution to the conflict. He called on all parties involved to make practical efforts towards this goal with a sense of urgency.
