Luton Airport is set to reopen its doors to passengers following a severe fire that led to the suspension of all flights. Travelers are now re-entering the terminal, and flights are anticipated to recommence from 3pm.
This restoration of operations follows the aftermath of a fire on Tuesday night which saw a section of a multi-storey car park succumb to a “significant structural collapse”. Originating from a diesel car, the fire quickly spread to other vehicles in the vicinity.
In response to the blaze, over 100 firefighters rushed to the scene to combat the flames. Their rapid response and diligent efforts have ensured that the fire is now under control, allowing for the phased reopening of the airport.
While no severe injuries were reported, a few firefighters and an airport staff member had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The airport’s management team has continually emphasized passenger and staff safety. With the situation under control, efforts are underway to ensure swift and smooth operations. Additionally, measures are being taken to install a ramp to enable the removal of undamaged vehicles from the affected car park.
In the interim, public transport options to the airport had been suspended, and certain nearby roads were closed. The significant police presence on site played a crucial role in managing traffic and directing individuals.
Many stranded travelers had been redirected to Luton Airport’s railway station in search of alternative transport options, while others sought coaches to other airports for different flight arrangements.
Major airline providers operating from Luton, including EasyJet and Wizz Air, have issued statements and advisories to their passengers concerning the disruption.
