A devastating attack, suspected to be from Russian forces, resulted in the deaths of 49 individuals, encompassing a six-year-old boy, during a memorial service at a cafe in the village of Hroza, northeastern Ukraine. The incident transpired on Thursday and was reported by Ukraine’s interior minister.

Oleh Synehubov, the regional governor, detailed that the attack occurred in the early afternoon, targeting both a cafe and a shop in Hroza, situated in the Kharkiv region. He revealed that numerous civilians had been present during the strike.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko shared a heart-wrenching insight, explaining that the small village, which has approximately 330 residents, had been conducting a memorial service in the targeted cafe. Addressing Ukrainian television, Klymenko remarked, “Every family, every household had members in attendance during this event. It’s a horrific tragedy.”

The aftermath of the attack also witnessed seven individuals hospitalized, making it one of the most harrowing Russian assaults on civilian areas in recent times.

Evidence of the devastation was made public, showcasing rescue workers navigating through the fiery debris. Photographs highlighted the magnitude of the attack, depicting bodies strewn amid fallen concrete and mangled metal, as well as rescue personnel relocating covered bodies from the scene.

While the specifics regarding whether the village was targeted by a shell or missile remain unclear, Klymenko emphasized the precision of the strike. Ukrainian security agencies are presently delving into the matter to ascertain more details.

Amidst this tragedy, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who was attending a European leaders’ summit in Spain, voiced his urge to end the “Russian terror.” Sharing his thoughts on the Telegram platform, he stressed the significance of fortifying Ukraine’s air defense, amplifying the strength of their military, and safeguarding the nation from further acts of terror.

Russia, since initiating a full-blown invasion in February 2022, has frequently executed airstrikes. In response, Ukraine has undertaken a counteroffensive in the southern and eastern regions, claiming gradual advancements. However, while Moscow remains silent on the Hroza incident, they have consistently refuted claims of intentionally targeting civilians. Nonetheless, multiple attacks have devastated civilian zones, along with essential infrastructures including energy, defense, and port facilities.
