The anticipated MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs) scheduled for 5 November in Paris has been cancelled in light of the current global security environment. High-profile artists like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, and Nicki Minaj were among the top nominees for this annual event.
Paramount, the parent company of MTV, explained the decision, emphasizing the safety of all involved – from the staff and crew to artists, fans, and partners from across the globe. With the ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza, organizers felt this was not the time for a worldwide musical festivity but rather a time to respect and mourn the numerous lives affected.
While the live event won’t be happening, the voting process remains intact, ensuring nominated artists will receive their MTV EMA Awards. The mode of announcement for the winners is yet to be detailed.
As this year’s cancellation was announced, EU interior ministers were in discussions about the repercussions of the war. In the backdrop, France has heightened its security measures, particularly after the tragic incident in Arras on 13 October where a teacher lost his life in a stabbing event. Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, has linked this suspected Islamist attack to the Israel-Hamas conflict. Additionally, recent days have seen security alerts at various French airports and repeated security concerns at the Palace of Versailles.
