According to the highest-ranking US military officer, Gen Mark Milley, Ukraine faces a challenging timeline of just over 30 days before adverse weather conditions hamper its ongoing counter-offensive efforts. Gen Milley shared his insights during an interview on the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg program, highlighting that colder weather would significantly impede Ukraine’s maneuverability.
Acknowledging that the offensive had progressed slower than initially anticipated, Gen Milley affirmed, “There’s still heavy fighting going on. The Ukrainians are still plugging away with steady progress.” While it remains too early to definitively assess the success of the counter-offensive, he emphasized that Ukraine continues to make steady advancements through the Russian front lines.
Gen Milley elaborated, “There’s still a reasonable amount of time, probably about 30 to 45 days’ worth of fighting weather left, so the Ukrainians aren’t done. There’s battles not done… they haven’t finished the fighting part of what they’re trying to accomplish.”
The counter-offensive, launched by Kyiv in the summer to liberate Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, has yielded only modest gains thus far. Ukrainian military leaders assert that they have breached Russia’s formidable initial defenses in the southern regions.
Gen Milley characterized the ongoing conflict as “long, slow, hard, and high-casualty-producing,” consistent with his earlier expectations.
During the same interview, Adm Sir Tony Radakin, the UK chief of defense staff, voiced his perspective that “Ukraine is winning and Russia is losing.” He attributed this to Russia’s failed aim to subjugate Ukraine and asserted that Ukraine has made substantial progress in regaining 50% of the seized territory. He credited international economic and diplomatic pressure for contributing to Ukraine’s success and noted that Russia was facing consequences due to these efforts.
