Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated a potential willingness to assist North Korea in developing its space and satellite program. During a visit to Russia’s Vostochny space launch site with Kim Jong Un, Putin responded affirmatively when asked if Russia would support North Korea in launching its satellites and rockets.
Putin stated, “That’s exactly why we came here. The leader of North Korea shows great interest in space, in rocketry, and they are trying to develop space. We’ll show our new objects.” This development hints at a deepening relationship between Russia and North Korea.
North Korea has made space technology a priority, although it has faced challenges, including failed attempts to launch a spy satellite into orbit this year. Kim Jong Un has emphasized the role of military satellites in protecting national safety and territorial stability.
However, providing technology related to space and satellite programs to North Korea would violate international sanctions aimed at restricting Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile capabilities.
The meeting between Putin and Kim at the Vostochny Cosmodrome has raised concerns. Some analysts speculate that Putin might offer sanctions-violating satellite launch technology in exchange for North Korean munitions, potentially to be used in Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
North Korea has signaled that the meeting will strengthen ties between the two countries. Kim’s visit to Russia is viewed as a significant step in reestablishing contact between North Korea and Russia, which had waned since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Former US National Security Adviser John Bolton characterized the meeting as “quite significant” and suggested it goes beyond a potential arms deal. The launch of short-range ballistic missiles by North Korea just hours before the summit added complexity to the situation, potentially signaling North Korea’s intent to demonstrate military readiness.
