Barcelona has officially announced a contract extension with German goalkeeper Marc Andre ter Stegen, reaffirming his status as one of their key players. Ter Stegen’s partnership with Barcelona has been extended for an additional five years, taking him through the summer of 2028.
Alongside this extension, Barcelona has revealed that the buyout clause for the 31-year-old goalkeeper now stands at a substantial 500 million euros, rendering it virtually impossible for other clubs to acquire him without engaging in negotiations. Notably, Marca reports that Ter Stegen will experience a reduced salary for the first two years of his new contract with Barcelona but will receive compensation in the final year.
Ter Stegen’s association with Barcelona began in the summer of 2014 when he transferred from Borussia Monchengladbach, just prior to the play-off matches against FK Sarajevo. His acquisition cost the German club 12 million euros. Ter Stegen’s journey with Barcelona has seen him evolve into a club legend, having made 379 appearances. He now ranks as the fourth goalkeeper with the most appearances in Barcelona’s history, with the legendary Victor Valdes leading the list with 535 appearances. Following the departures of Alba and Busquets from the club, Ter Stegen has assumed the role of the second captain in the team’s hierarchy. Sergi Roberto currently holds the position of the first captain, while Araujo and De Jong also contribute to the leadership structure.
With the captain’s armband adorning his arm, Ter Stegen has notably maintained clean sheets in the first two matches of the Primera Liga this season, with Barcelona securing four points from encounters against Getafe and Cadiz.
