US President Joe Biden is potentially facing the prospect of an impeachment inquiry related to his family’s business dealings. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, has announced his intent to launch a formal investigation into what he characterized as a “culture of corruption” surrounding the Biden family.
McCarthy pointed out that House Republicans have spent recent months uncovering what they consider to be serious and credible allegations concerning President Biden’s conduct. He is planning to gather lawmakers behind closed doors several times this week, including for a meeting to discuss the possibility of pursuing impeachment.
In McCarthy’s words, “I am directing our House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. We will go where the evidence takes us.”
The Republicans, who now hold a narrow majority in the House, have accused President Biden of financially benefiting from his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business ventures during his tenure as vice president from 2009 to 2017. However, they have not yet presented substantial evidence to support these claims.
McCarthy has stated that multiple committees will initiate efforts to collect evidence related to potential financial misconduct.
A spokesperson for Speaker McCarthy clarified that the House was not expected to vote on an impeachment inquiry at this time.
During a House hearing, a former business associate of Hunter Biden alleged that the president’s son had created the appearance of granting access to power while his father served as vice president. The White House has consistently maintained that there is no basis for such an investigation, and President Biden has responded by mocking Republicans for considering impeachment.
It’s worth noting that many Republicans were highly critical when the Democratic-controlled House impeached President Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021, although he was ultimately acquitted both times in the Senate.
Some right-wing members of the Republican Party have even suggested that they might seek to replace Kevin McCarthy as the House leader if he doesn’t proceed with an impeachment effort against President Biden. However, it’s crucial to understand that even if the Republican-controlled House were to vote in favor of impeachment—a challenging prospect given their slim majority—it would face significant challenges passing in the Democratic-controlled Senate, making the success of such an effort uncertain.
