Nurse Convicted of Murdering Babies in UK Hospital’s Neonatal Unit

A nurse, Lucy Letby, in her mid-20s, has been convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder others while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital’s neonatal unit between June 2015 and June 2016. This shocking case makes her the most prolific child killer of modern times in the UK.

The verdicts were delivered over several days, with the judge imposing reporting restrictions until the trial’s conclusion. Letby, who also faced seven counts of attempted murder, displayed emotions during some of the verdicts. Families of the victims were visibly emotional as well, with one juror also breaking down during the proceedings.

The trial revealed that Letby was also found not guilty of two charges of attempted murder, while the jury could not reach verdicts on six additional counts of attempted murder. Throughout the nine-month trial, the anonymity of the children involved was maintained, although their names were disclosed during court proceedings.

The heartbreaking story includes cases where Letby attempted to murder twin brothers, born prematurely and only days old at the time of the incidents. Parents of the victims, speaking publicly for the first time, described Letby’s behavior as “cool and calm” after attempting to harm one of the twins with an injection of excessive air. Tragically, one child sustained brain damage as a result of the assault.

Letby was characterized by prosecutors as “devious” and “cold-blooded,” having misused medical equipment and medicines to cause unexpected collapses of infants on the neonatal ward. Victims of her actions were born prematurely, and the trial illuminated the extent of her malevolent actions that betrayed the trust placed in her.

In the aftermath of the trial, Cheshire Police announced an investigation into the possibility of Letby harming other children in her care prior to June 2015. The complexity of the case and its chilling revelations have deeply affected all those involved, as the search for answers continues.
