In an official announcement, Manchester United has confirmed the mutual agreement for 21-year-old Mason Greenwood to leave Old Trafford. This decision follows a period of suspension for the player that began on January 30, 2022, stemming from allegations linked to a young woman, including images and videos shared online.
Initially facing serious charges, including attempted rape and assault, Greenwood’s legal situation shifted when the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) discontinued the case. Throughout this tumultuous period, Manchester United upheld the suspension, and now the club has clarified that Greenwood will not return to the Old Trafford fold.
In their official statement, Manchester United elaborated: “Our internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood commenced in February 2023, following the dropping of all charges against him. While acknowledging the complexity of the situation, our assessment of the evidence led us to conclude that the online materials did not offer a complete perspective, and that Mason did not commit the offenses for which he was initially charged.”
Nonetheless, Greenwood himself acknowledges his mistakes and is taking responsibility for them. He stated, “I understand that the perceptions created by social media may lead to judgment. I want to emphasize that I was raised with the understanding that any form of violence or abuse within relationships is wrong. I was acquitted of the charges against me in February, but I admit to my errors within the relationship that contributed to the social media content.”
Greenwood expressed his commitment to personal growth and learning from his experiences: “I am focused on being a better professional athlete, a responsible father, and a supportive partner. After collaborative discussions involving Manchester United, my family, and myself, it was determined that continuing my football career away from Old Trafford would be the most suitable course of action.”
Mason Greenwood has scored 35 goals across 129 matches during his time with Manchester United. His contract, which extends until June 2025 with an optional extra year, signifies the potential he possesses. Greenwood closed his statement by expressing gratitude to his family, loved ones, and the club for their support and guidance, pledging to channel his efforts into both personal development and a positive impact on and off the field.
