The bridge in question, known as the Kerch Bridge, is of significant strategic importance as one of the two main supply routes for Russia to provide resources to the occupied Crimean Peninsula. The attack has temporarily severed this military artery, raising concerns for Russia and its leader, both strategically and symbolically. The other supply route, the coastal highway on the Sea of Azov, is also under threat from Ukrainian missile strikes.
Moscow swiftly blamed Kyiv for the blasts, labeling it a “terror” attack. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused the Ukrainian regime of terrorism and suggested the involvement of American and British intelligence agencies and politicians. However, no evidence was provided to support these claims.
