Manhunt Underway After Deadly Mass Shooting at Baltimore Block Party

A manhunt is currently underway in Baltimore following a mass shooting at a block party that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left 28 others wounded. The incident is the latest in a series of deadly gun violence incidents in the United States.

The attack occurred shortly after 12:30 am on Sunday in the Brooklyn Homes area of the southern part of the city, according to Richard Worley, the acting commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department. Worley addressed reporters at the scene, providing details of the tragic event.

All the victims were adults, including three individuals who are in critical condition. Nine people were transported to hospitals by ambulance, while 20 others walked into area hospitals with gunshot wounds. An 18-year-old woman was killed at the scene, and a 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after.

Eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of people had gathered in the area for an event called “Brooklyn Day.” One witness informed TV station Fox 45 that they heard approximately 20 to 30 gunshots during the incident.

As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Worley stated that the police are actively working to identify a suspect and determine the motive behind the attack. The crime scene is extensive, and investigators anticipate spending a significant amount of time gathering evidence and conducting inquiries.

The mass shooting in Baltimore occurred during a period of gatherings across the country leading up to the July Fourth holiday. In addition to the incident in Baltimore, another shooting in Kansas resulted in the injury of seven people, while two others were hospitalized after being trampled as people rushed out of a nightclub.

Lakell Nelson, a witness at the block party in Baltimore, recounted that there had been several false alarms earlier in the night, with people mistaking the sounds of fireworks for gunfire. However, when she was about to leave and get to her car, the actual shooting began. Nelson described the shots as continuous and recalled two young women approaching her, revealing that they had been shot.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, who spoke to reporters at the crime scene, strongly condemned the shooting, describing it as an absolute tragedy that could have been prevented. He emphasized the urgent need to address the proliferation of illegal guns on the streets and the accessibility of firearms to those who should not possess them. Mayor Scott expressed determination in finding the individuals responsible for the shooting.

The United States continues to face a concerning rate of gun deaths, with the highest number among developed countries. In 2022 alone, there were at least 44,357 gun deaths, including suicides, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The mass shooting in Baltimore marks at least the 337th such incident this year, defined as an incident where four or more people are killed or wounded by gunfire.

The shooting in Baltimore comes as federal prosecutors in the city highlight their efforts to combat violent crime. Although there has been a decrease in homicides and shootings compared to the same period last year, the incident underscores the persistent issue of gun violence in the United States.
