The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that a second child has tragically died following a car crash at a school in Wimbledon. The latest victim, eight-year-old Nuria Sajjad, is mourned by her family, who describe her as “the light of our lives.”
Authorities were alerted to the incident at The Study Prep School on Camp Road on Thursday morning. A car had crashed through a fence and collided with a building, leading to the loss of young lives and causing severe injuries.
The first victim, Selena Lau, also eight years old, sadly passed away from her injuries on the same day.
Nuria’s family released a heartfelt statement expressing their profound sorrow and emphasizing her vibrant personality, kindness, and the love she brought to those around her. They extend their gratitude to the emergency services, the staff at St George’s Hospital, and the supportive community during this difficult time. The family requests privacy to grieve.
In response to the tragedy, a significant number of emergency vehicles, including 35 police vehicles, arrived at the scene. First aid was provided to the injured individuals, with a woman in her 40s remaining in the hospital in a serious condition. Other individuals, including a seven-month-old girl, received medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the car, a 46-year-old woman from Wimbledon, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. While her condition is assessed as non-life-threatening, she has been bailed pending further investigation.
The Serious Collision Investigation Unit of the Metropolitan Police is leading the ongoing investigation into the incident.
The families of the victims have urged respect for their privacy during this tragic period. The local community, including Wimbledon Village, is deeply shocked by the incident, especially considering it occurred on the last day of term, a typically joyful occasion. The shared grief emphasizes the close connections many have to the affected school and highlights the need for support and compassion in the wake of the tragedy.
