A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the stabbing of a teacher in Stoke Orchard, located about five miles south of Tewkesbury. Firearms officers apprehended the teenager and recovered a knife within an hour of the incident. The suspect, who is from Tewkesbury, remains in custody. The exact age of the teenager has not been disclosed.
The motive behind the stabbing remains unclear, but it is not believed to be terrorism-related. No other individuals were injured during the incident. Police received reports of a “threat to a teacher” shortly after 9 am, followed by a call from the ambulance service reporting the stabbing of a male teacher in a school corridor. The teacher was hospitalized with a single stab wound and is currently in stable condition.
Tewkesbury School, located on Ashchurch Road, was placed under lockdown, and a thorough search was conducted to ensure there was no further danger. Two other schools in the area were advised to close their doors as a precautionary measure.
Specialist resources, including the National Police Air Service, were deployed to track down the suspect, who was initially believed to have hidden within the school grounds. The search, involving armed police, was extensive and meticulous to ensure the safety of all individuals and to apprehend the suspect.
Police will maintain a presence in the area as the investigation continues. A crowd of approximately 100 people gathered outside the school following the incident, and uniformed officers were stationed at the entrances. The school has yet to announce when it will reopen, and plans are being developed to provide support to students and staff in the aftermath of the incident.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his concern for those affected, and the Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, stated her deep concern while affirming the government’s support for the school. The situation is being closely monitored, and assistance from the emergency services is readily available.
