A judge has approved a settlement agreement for the family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who tragically lost her life on a film set. The incident occurred in 2021 when actor Alec Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun while filming the movie Rust.

In 2022, lawyers representing Halyna Hutchins’ husband, Matthew, and their son, Andros, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and the film’s other producers. Later that year, an undisclosed settlement was reached between the parties involved.

On Thursday, US Judge Bryan Biedscheid gave his approval to the agreement, which includes provisions for Andros, who will receive “periodic payments” when he reaches the ages of 18 and 22. The judge’s order stated that the settlement was deemed fair, appropriate, and in the best interests of Andros Hutchins, who is a minor and a protected person.

As part of the settlement, Matthew Hutchins will also assume the role of an executive producer on Rust, the western film that recently resumed filming in Montana.

In April, manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin, who was holding the prop gun when the fatal incident occurred, were dropped by prosecutors in New Mexico. Baldwin had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The approval of the settlement brings some resolution to the tragic event and provides support for Halyna Hutchins’ family as they navigate the aftermath of her untimely death.
