OpenAI, according to a report from Reuters citing the Information, is set to introduce an app store where developers can sell their artificial intelligence (AI) models created using OpenAI’s technology. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, shared the plans during a meeting with developers in London in May, as reported by Reuters.

The app store from OpenAI will potentially compete with existing customers and technology partners, including Salesforce and Microsoft. Reuters mentioned that Aquant and Khan Academy, two of OpenAI’s customers, may also express interest in offering AI models backed by ChatGPT on this new marketplace.

If OpenAI decides to charge a commission for paid purchases, similar to Google and Apple’s app stores, the marketplace app store could become a significant source of revenue. Currently, OpenAI generates revenue through ChatGPT Plus subscriptions, priced at $20 per month, and by providing access to its APIs for various AI models.

To mirror the models of major tech companies, OpenAI might limit the listing of ChatGPT-supported models exclusively to its own marketplace and not allow distribution through other channels. However, this approach could raise concerns about competition, particularly with Apple’s App Store or Google’s Play Store, if OpenAI adopts a similar revenue model.

To maintain a trustworthy platform, OpenAI would need to moderate the app store and prevent the distribution of spam and illegal apps, especially considering Altman’s remarks on the need for regulation of AI tools. Currently, Google and Apple employ measures to prevent spam and illegal apps from existing on their platforms. OpenAI would likely have to provide robust support tools to assist developers if it demands exclusivity for selling on its app store.

During his testimony before the US Senate Committee on May 17, 2023, Altman emphasized the necessity of regulating AI tools, including ChatGPT, and stressed that both companies and users bear responsibility for the impact of these tools in the world. This further highlights the importance of moderation and responsible practices on the app store platform proposed by OpenAI.
