Footballer Quincy Promes Facing Prosecution in the Netherlands for Cocaine Importation and Assault Charges

Quincy Promes, a footballer currently playing for Spartak Moscow and formerly with Sevilla and Ajax, is facing prosecution in the Netherlands for his alleged involvement in the importation of over 1,300 kilograms of cocaine. The cocaine was intercepted in two shipments at the Belgian port of Antwerp in January 2020. The Dutch public prosecutor’s office has brought charges against Promes.

The shipments, consisting of approximately 650 kilograms and 713 kilograms of cocaine, were seized by Belgian port authorities more than three years ago. The Dutch prosecutor’s office has implicated Promes in the drug trafficking operation, as reported by the local newspaper Het Parool and later confirmed by the Dutch Public Ministry.

Promes, a former Ajax player and international with the Netherlands national team, is suspected of drug trafficking and participation in a criminal organization. A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for next Monday, during which Promes’s lawyer, Robert Malevicz, will provide explanations.

In addition to the drug trafficking charges, Promes is also under investigation for a separate incident of “serious assault” that occurred in July 2020. The Dutch Prosecutor’s Office reopened the investigation after Promes allegedly stabbed his cousin in the knee during a family gathering. The charges, however, do not include attempted murder, as there is insufficient evidence to establish the intent to kill. The assault caused severe injuries to the cousin’s knee, resulting in long-term mobility issues, including difficulty walking, running, and squatting, as well as post-traumatic stress disorder.

Promes has consistently denied the assault allegations, but the prosecutor’s office claims to have telephone conversations in which he confesses to the stabbing.

After his arrest in 2020, Promes was sold by Ajax to Spartak Moscow for 8.5 million euros, with additional variables included in the transfer fee. This was a significant decrease compared to the 15.7 million euros plus variables that Sevilla paid for his services during the 2018/19 season.
