Actor Alec Baldwin has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer killed during filming on the set of Rust in October 2021. In court documents filed on Thursday, Baldwin said the suit was an attempt to “obtain compensation” following Hutchins’s death. The family filed the lawsuit in February, alleging battery, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and loss of consortium. Baldwin, who was rehearsing with a gun for a scene when it went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza, has pleaded not guilty to two charges of involuntary manslaughter.
According to Sky News’ US partner network NBC, the court document read: “The loss of a daughter and sister is undoubtedly painful in any circumstance. Yet Plaintiffs – who had been distanced from Halyna physically, financially, and emotionally for years before her death – have no viable cause of action against Defendants. This action is especially misguided.”
In October 2022, Baldwin was also sued by Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, their son and estate, alleging reckless behavior and cost-cutting led to her death. A settlement was reached outside of court. The next court hearing is scheduled for 9 June.
